When I am painting I feel like there is nothing else, I find myself fully absorbed and it washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. The process transports me. I relive walks, sailing or staring at the sea, feeling the weather and seasons, being out of doors and creating and capturing a moment in time.
Creating a painting for me is a balance between capturing these feelings and impressions whilst still reasoning with formal elements of composition and colour. Ever since sailing into Cornwall in 2012, I have been drawn to the Helford River and the Lizard Peninsula with all its magic and secrets; the coastline, river, countryside, lanes, ancient trees and stones, churches and houses.
Passion for the sea and sailing is in your bones, salt in the veins so they say. I have been around wooden boats all my life. I like to try and capture a true likeness of each vessel and the sea in my own impressionistic style. Wooden boats capture the soul, I like to paint them not only for each boat's story and character but also what sailing and the sea means to me- dreams, connection to friends and family, escapism, freedom of convention, being outdoors in all weather and the healing power of the natural world.
